School shootings: we’ve not finished learning

When faced with an active shooter, our kids are told to shut off the lights, lock the classroom door and hide. That’s it.

These “hide and hope for the best” measures need to be updated to include options such as running, barricading and as a last resort, to fight. The FBI and Homeland Security support these training methods, yet Canadian authorities and school officials have not adapted to this huge gap in the current Canadian training model. The Emergency Management Ontario, website is silent on this issue.

When faced with a disaster or violent encounter, your first and best option is usually to run, not hide. Getting away from the threat is a priority. If you can safely remove yourself from the threat, your chances of survival are greatly increased.
